Lewis Henry Werle injured in a flood, 5 sep 1925
There is a book out that was wrote on the history of Wenatchee Mountains in Washington State.
History of the Wenatchee Mountains By Edson Dow reads as follows:
On September 5 1925, at 4 p.m., the Wenatchee area was visited by nimbus thunder clouds, some hail storms and an above average rainfall. Although the air rocked with frequent claps of thunder, nothing else distinguished this day from any other.
Suddenly it happen. On the Leo Hauck ranch up Squilchuck, the family saw this moving mass, with rocks weighing tons. They made a run for the hillside. Both the water from the main canyon and the side canyon threatened the home, and although it was filled with water, all of the family were saved and the home was not materially damaged.
It was all over in 10 to 15 minutes. The wall of water, estimated at 10 to 30 feet in depth, passed on with its terrible destruction. After this short period of time, you could walk through the running water of Squilchuck Creek, but in that wall of water was as much water as the Wenatchee River carries. Its terrible death and destuction will live on for many.
While the rescue was going on, one man was heard to wail, I've lost everything. My house cost $6,000 and no insurance. FRED GROFF, (married to Lewis´ aunt Alma Edgarda Palmer). His eyes red with fatigue, his beard two days growth and his jaw twitching, suddenly turned on to the speaker. Everything , he scorned. You´ve lost nothong. My Babies are gone. The clothing was gone from most of the bodies. The three Groff children were found huddled togethe - dead.
The known dead were: John William Evans, age 68; Wilbert E. Overman, age 27; Mrs. Ellen Butts, age 45; Mrs. Alice Sophis Cleveland, age 38; Paul Russell Pettit, age 24, brakeman for the Great Northern; Mary Groff, age 8, Alice Myrlte Groff, age 6, Florence Eleanor Groff, age 4, Chester George Groff, age under a year, Mrs. Dominick MacDonald, age 35; Alma Ernst, age 11; Alex Murdock, Mrs. D.R. Smythe; Florence Emeline MacDonald, age 2.
The injured were Mrs. Ella Palmer, age 30, who had scalp wounds and body bruis, LOUIS PALMER, AGE 4 (months), badly bruised; Paul Hanson, age 6, fractured bones and possible internal injury; Mrs Fred Groff, age 38, body bruises; Herold Groff, ag 11, fracutured ankle, body bruises, large scalp wound ; Bernice MacDonald, age 4, bruises; Mildred Hanson, age 7, injured back and scalp wound; Jack Smythe, age 40, scalp wound, body bruises. Jacob Ernst, age 50, in a hysterical condition over the death of his daughter, Alma, was taken to the hospital.
After the flood receded, the stream quietly returned to normalcy and a drizzling rain came down. Except for the terrible mess and aching hearts, there was little to indicate the death and destruction of a few moments before.
