Boy Sees Father Killed in Sewer Ditch Cave-In.
Rigid with disbelief, the 11-year-old boy stood on the edge of a Garden City sewer excavation. The horror that gripped his throat forestalled even the relief of a scream.
He had leaped back as the earth trembled, then saw tons of the soggy sandy loam cave in upon the 20-foot ditch. His father and a fellow workman were buried be-fore his eyes.
The father, Axel B. Christiensen. 45, of 21301 Rock-well, Farmington, was working with Graydon Ellis, 27, of 914 Wyandotte, Royal Oak, when the walla of the ditch collapsed killing them.
Both were employes of the Morris Mickelsen Construction Co They were digging in front of 31787 Florence, Oak Park.
Chrisensen had a family of eight children. During school vacation he made a practice of taking one child on the job with him each day. Wednesday it was Richard's turn.
Richard leaped into the pit, clawing the heavy earth with bare hands as workmen battled for 30 minutes to reach the entombed men.
Richard watched as the mud covered bodies were brought to the surface. Oxygen tanks were waiting. It was too late.
Richard is a Free Press carrier, covering his neighborhood area in Farmington. Wednesday night he stayed on the job, peddling the papers that detailed the story of his father's death.
The other children include: Chris, 19: Walter. 15: Diana, 13; Denny. 10: Sandra, 7; Larry, G. and Kathleen, 2.
