COTTONWOOD -- Services for Mary E. Javens 84, of Cottonwood will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, at First United Presbyterian Church in Cottonwood. Burial will be in the Marshall Cemetery. Visitation will be all day today at the Hamilton-Birk Funeral Home in Marshall and will include a 7:30 p.m. prayer service. There also will be visitation at the church, one hour prior to services.
Mrs. Javens died Monday at her home.
She was born June 27, 1905, in Aikin to James and Marie (Sorensen) Christensen. A graduate of Cottonwood High School, she also attended Mankato Teachers College for two years. Lester Javens and she were married Feb. 15, 1928, in Marshall. They resided near Cottonwood. After her husband's death on March 9, 1981, she moved into Cottonwood.
During her lifetime, she taught school, was a homemaker and also a newspaper and magazine columnist. Her hobbies include reading, writing poetry, storytelling, baking and crafts. She was a member of First United Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include sons, David and Robert, both of Cottonwood; daughters, Mary Jo (Mrs. Ed) Horsmann of Grand Rapids and Emma Jean (Mrs. Alan) Hendrix of Kirkland, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers, one sister and one great granddaughter.
