Dan was born Jan. 15, 1962 at Manchester, to H. Dean and Mary Ann (Nelsen) Stegen. Born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, Dan's life began with obstacles, challenges and blessed victories. Despite doctors' predictions to the contrary, Dan learned to walk and even run. He graduated from Starmont in 1980, where he participated in band, choir and speech, as well as school plays and musicals. He earned a degree in social work and went to work at Bremwood Children's Home in Waverly in 1984. Dan later attended Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque and graduated in 1992, becoming ordained in the Lutheran Church.
Following his ordination, Dan began his ministerial career at the Bethlehem and Skudesnes churches in Pierpont, South Dakota. Following that, he served as chaplain at the Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford, South Dakota. Dan went on to serve congregations at Nathanael Lutheran Church (Alcester, SD), Immanuel Lutheran Church (Akron, Iowa), Our Savior's Lutheran Church (Callender, Iowa), St. Peter Lutheran Church (Brunsville, Iowa), and Christ Lutheran Church (Le Mars).
In 2003, Dan retired from active ministry due to health difficulties and returned to live at the Gernand Center in Strawberry Point. He continued to serve God and man by ministering to his fellow residents and those of the nursing home whenever he was physically able. He was a resident at Mercy Living Plus in Oelwein for about one year.
